How Gate Automation Works

1. Survey and Assessment

Your engineer visits your property to assess the gate, pillars, posts, and power supply. They measure the gate weight, check the hinge condition, and determine which motor type suits your setup. The survey takes about an hour.

2. Motor Selection

Based on the gate type, weight, and usage pattern, your engineer recommends the right motor. We install CAME, BFT, Nice, and FAAC — all proven brands with readily available parts for future servicing.

3. Installation

Your engineer carries out the full installation: motor fitting, control board wiring, safety device installation (photocells, safety edges), remote programming, and intercom integration if required.

4. Handover and Testing

The gate is tested through multiple full cycles. Your engineer walks you through the operation, shows you the manual release, and provides all remotes, keys, and documentation.

Types of Automation

Swing Gate — Arm Motors

Visible arm motors mounted on the gate post. Suitable for most residential swing gates. Easier to service and maintain. Best for lighter gates.

Swing Gate — Underground Motors

Hidden below ground level in a foundation box. No visible motor — a cleaner look. Best for heavier gates and heritage properties where aesthetics matter. Requires drainage to prevent water damage.

Sliding Gate Motors

Track-mounted motors that drive the gate along a rail. Best for properties where swing space is limited — the gate slides parallel to the fence line. Requires a straight, level track.

Which Gates Can Be Automated?

Most manual gates can be motorised. The key requirements are:

  • Gate condition: Hinges must be sound, the gate must swing or slide freely by hand. If it drags or sticks manually, that needs fixing first.
  • Gate weight: Motors have weight limits. Most residential gates (up to 400kg) are within range. Very heavy gates may need commercial-grade motors.
  • Power supply: You need a mains power supply near the gate. If there isn't one, cabling needs to be run from the house — we can advise on this.
  • Space: Swing gates need clearance to open. Sliding gates need space beside the opening for the gate to slide into.

Your engineer will assess all of this during the survey and tell you honestly whether automation is feasible and cost-effective for your gate.

Motor Brands

BrandBest ForPrice Range
CAMEReliable all-rounder, parts widely availableMid-range
BFTHeavy-duty, long-lastingMid to premium
NiceSmart-home control, full residential-to-heavy-duty rangeMid-range to premium
FAACPremium, commercial crossoverPremium

Nice is our default recommendation — for the 3-year manufacturer warranty, the strong smart-home options, and after-sales support straight from the maker — but we'll happily fit any of these brands. We recommend what suits your gate, not the one with the highest margin.

A lot of our automation work is putting right gates that were poorly installed in the first place. See what we find on site — real examples of the wiring, weatherproofing and safety shortcuts that bring gates back to us for repair after repair.

Most residential automation is a double swing gate, and here's the honest shape of it (all +VAT). The automation itself — a pair of motors, control board, two remotes and a set of safety photocells, installed and force-tested — starts around £2,500+VAT. Full safety (a second set of photocells and posts, £325–£350 a set, plus a safety edge) adds about £650+VAT, and removing an old, failed system about £325+VAT — so a typical reinstall on an existing gate, with the technical file and force-testing included, lands around £3,500–£5,000+VAT. A phone or video intercom adds roughly £1,150–£1,650+VAT. If the gate itself also needs replacing, a bespoke gate starts around £3,500+VAT, and a full new-gate-and-automation project usually runs £6,000–£11,000+VAT. Your survey turns all of this into one fixed price for your exact gate.

Commercial or industrial premises, and gates serving 4+ properties: add £50 to our standard fees, with larger jobs quoted at commercial rates. A single home, or a shared gate for up to 3 properties, pays the domestic price. You'll see the exact total before you book online.
